Below is a summary of the rules for the 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade levels
Hard Out of Bounds - This rule applies at all levels. Under this rule, when the ball goes out of bounds, the ref blows her whistle, and everyone holds their spot. Possession of the ball goes over to the other team. The girl closest to the ball on the team to whom possession is rewarded places the ball in her crosse, advances 4 meters onto the field from the spot area where the ball went out of bounds, and on the whistle runs it in. Unless the ref so instructs, no defender can adjust her position to get closer to the player to whom possession has been rewarded.
The old rule of "first to the ball" will still apply to situation where there has been a shot on goal.
3rd/4th grade rules:
(1) 7 v. 7 with no goalie. Goal is either tipped so that the goal mouth is in the shape of a triangle, or a shooting net may be placed on the goal.
(2) No offsides is called, but try to have two girls from each team remain behind the 50.
(3) We play the "3 Pass" rule, i.e., the team with possession must maintain possession of the ball for 3 consecutive passes before attempting a shot on goal. This does not mean 3 "completed" passes, it must be that the team maintains possession for 3 consecutive attempted passes. This is NOT an official rule. It is a rule that Quix Stix plays to encourage good passing, catching, and team play. Coaches are responsible for counting out the number of passes. The ref is NOT responsible for that.
(4) No checking permitted.
(5) The "3 second" rule is in effect. So, if a defender maintains good defensive position and mirrors her girl for 3 consecutive seconds, it is a turnover and the ref awards the ball to the defending team. Since there is no checking, this is the way to reward strong defensive play.
(6) Four ten (10) minute quarters - running time. 1 minute break between quarters and 5 minute break at half.
(7) No overtime.
(8) Per US Lacrosse rules - Direct shots ARE allowed on a major violation (e.g., shooting space violation), if the goal cage is in the inverted position. In that event, the offensive team may attempt a direct penalty shot on goal.
(9) No coaches allowed on the field during the game.
5th/6th grade rules:
(1) 11 v. 11 plus a goalie. There are 3 "attack players" (first home, second home third home); 5 midfield players (2 attack wings, one center and 2 defens wings) and 3 defensive players (3rd man, cover point, and point), and one goalie.
(2) Offsides is called. Each team must have four players behind the restraining line.
(3) The "3 Pass" rule is optional and is used at the discretion of the coaches.
(4) New for 2007 - Modified Checking permitted.
(5) The "3 second" rule continues to be in effect. So, if a defender maintains good defensive position and mirrors her girl for 3 consecutive seconds, it is a turnover and the ref awards the ball to the defending team. Since there is only modified checking, permitted, this is the way to reward strong defensive play.
(6) Two twenty five (25) minute halves - running time. 5 minute break between halves.
(7) No overtime.
(8) Direct shots are permitted on a major violation (e.g., shooting space violation).
(9) No coaches allowed on the field during the game.
7th/8th grade rules:
(4) Modified checking is permitted. Checking is permitted only if the offensive player's stick is completely below her shoulder. The check must be in a downward motion away from the body. The check cannot be held. Once contact is made, the checking player must "release" her check.
(5) The "3 second" rule is in effect. So, if a defender maintains good defensive position and mirrors her girl for 3 consecutive seconds, it is a turnover and the ref awards the ball to the defending team. Since there is only modified checking permitted, this is the way to reward strong defensive play.
(6) Two twenty five (25) minute halves - running time. 5 minute break between halves.
(7) No overtime.
(8) Direct shots are permitted on a major violation (e.g., shooting space violation).
(9) No coaches allowed on the field during the game.
